The basics

What "PCB fabrication and assembly" actually means

The phrase bundles two distinct manufacturing stages that are often bought together. Understanding where one ends and the other begins is the difference between a clean quote and a surprise invoice.

Stage 1 — Fabrication

Building the bare board

Fabrication turns your copper layout into a physical laminate. Sheets of fiberglass and copper are bonded, imaged, etched, drilled, plated, coated with solder mask, and finished with a silkscreen. The output is an empty printed circuit board — every trace and pad in place, but no components yet.

Key fabrication variables are layer count, board thickness, copper weight, minimum trace/space, and the surface finish that protects exposed copper (HASL, OSP, or ENIG).

Stage 2 — Assembly

Populating the board

Assembly mounts and solders components onto the bare board to create a working circuit. Surface-mount parts are placed by pick-and-place machines and fixed in a reflow oven; through-hole parts are wave- or hand-soldered. The result is a functional assembly, ready for test.

If you already have a fabricator you trust, you can also source PCB assembly on its own from an assembly-focused shop and simply ship your bare boards in to be populated.

Gerber + drill

Layer-by-layer copper, mask and silkscreen artwork plus the NC drill map. This drives fabrication. ODB++ or IPC-2581 work too.

Bill of materials

BOM.csv

Every component with reference designator, value, footprint and a manufacturer part number so parts can be sourced or checked.

Pick-and-place

CPL / XY

Centroid data giving each part's X/Y position, rotation and side. This tells the placement machine exactly where every component lands.

How to choose a PCB fabrication and assembly partner

PCB fabrication and assembly, FAQ

What is the difference between PCB fabrication and assembly?+
Fabrication produces the bare printed circuit board — the layered laminate with etched copper, drilled holes, solder mask and silkscreen, but no components. Assembly mounts and solders the electronic components onto that board to make a working circuit. Fabrication makes the canvas; assembly paints it.
What files do I need to place an order?+
For fabrication: Gerber files (or ODB++ / IPC-2581) plus an NC drill file. For assembly you add a bill of materials (BOM) listing every part, and a pick-and-place / centroid file (CPL or XY data) giving each component's position, rotation and side.
What is turnkey versus consigned assembly?+
Turnkey means the manufacturer buys all the components and delivers finished boards — the simplest path. Consigned means you supply the parts and pay only for labor, which can be cheaper if you already hold stock or want to control sourcing. Many shops offer a partial-turnkey mix where they buy the commodity parts and you supply the specialized ones.
How is the price actually calculated?+
Fabrication scales with board area, layer count, finish and quantity. Assembly adds a one-time stencil and setup fee, a per-unique-part feeder cost, and a per-solder-joint placement cost. That's why ten prototypes feel expensive per board while a thousand units are cheap — the fixed setup is spread across far more boards.
How long does it take?+
Standard fabrication is usually a few business days to about a week; assembly adds a few more days once parts are in hand. Expedited services can compress this significantly. In practice, component lead times are the biggest and least predictable variable.
Should one company do both fabrication and assembly?+
Using a single full-service provider gives you one point of accountability and avoids finger-pointing if something is off — the same partner owns both the board and the build. Splitting the work can save money or let you keep a favorite fabricator, at the cost of coordinating two vendors and shipping bare boards between them.
